Mark Pope does it again! 6-2 Point guard Alex Barcello will transfer from the University of Arizona and join Mark Pope’s squad in Provo, Utah.
Barcello attended High School at Corona Del Sol in Tempe, Arizona and was surrounded by a lot of hype. He was an All State player in Arizona his sophomore, junior and senior seasons and won Arizona Gatorade player of the year in 2015 and 2017. A four star recruit, he was offered by Virginia, USC, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Stanford, Indiana and obviously the University of Arizona. He appeared in 21 games as a freshman at UA and had his season high 11 points against Long Beach State. This past season, his sophomore year, Barcello played in 30 of the Wildcats 32 games scoring in double figures three times, however, he struggled to find consistent minutes which ultimately led to his decision to transfer.
Alex Barcello is a very efficient and athletic guard, and he put that all on display at a game I happened to attend in 2015. Alex Barcello, just a sophomore, was squaring off against Marcus Howard (Currently at Marquette) in a game that pitted two of the best teams in the state against each other. Barcello came out hot and stayed that way the entire night, it was a performance unlike any other I have ever seen. Barcello finished the night 19/24 from the field, 4/6 from three and 9/9 from the free throw line. Alex would not let his team lose that night; it was a dominant performance from the jump to the final whistle that showcased how talented of a player he is.
When TJ Haws graduates following this season there will be a hole at the point guard position and Mark Pope has found his replacement. At Utah Valley coach Pope was known for his ability to land transfers and he is showing he can still do that as the head coach at BYU.
